Indrani Chowdhury’s ‘Brown gal in the rain’ is a beautiful compilation of poems that touch the soul, primarily because they are about topics and issues that are so commonplace. Indrani’s writing is lyrical and captivating. She expertly weaves verses, masterfully using vocabulary as a tool to craft stanzas that sparkle with her trademark poetic effervescence.
The book is divided into 6 sections with each section dealing with a particular theme.
The sections are – ballads of the heart, hues of life, peekaboo, let there be light, grazing the meadows of nature, lightweight singles. The poems in these sections are further divided into various poetic styles (and not all of them are modern). There are some lyrical poems, some that rhyme or are more prosaic in nature. Some that are written in free verse and others that are reminiscent of the bards of yore, the masters of poetry.
My favourite poem in the entire book was ‘The werewolf and the princess’ (narrative poetry). I absolutely loved this poem. I also enjoyed the ‘mermaids’ ramp’, ‘paper boats’, ’homecoming’ , ‘souq’ , ‘summer’s last lament’ , etc.
This is a beautiful book.
