The dream I woke up to

For as far as my eye could see, cerulean waters lapped

Under a clear azure sky filled with a few cottony puffs of clouds.

The coral white sand, soft and beguiling like a nymph’s touch,

Was littered with shells of all sizes, shapes and colors.

My eyes opened to this vista that stretched endlessly before me.

I gazed about in awe as the swaying coconut palms fanned me.

I ran my hand through the sand & wished time would not slip away like it.

I wanted to stay like this forever, happy, content and alone.

The iridescent water, rainbow like, glinted in the golden hued sun.

Little crustaceans scurried about dealing with their day’s work.

It all seemed so surreal for there was nary a soul about.

Enchanted I looked at the birds that flew on the horizon.

Was I in the Caribbean? Or perhaps this was Maldives, or Seychelles?

Whatever the locale be, its beauty made my heart sigh a happy note.

This land of no man, perhaps I dreamed about, but how in that moment

My satiated heart wished that a reality it could become.

About Sonal Singh

An author, storyteller, and full-time observer of life’s glorious absurdities. I write humour-laced stories where chaos wears fluffy fur, emotions arrive uninvited, and middle-class Indian households become ecosystems of drama, love, and unsolicited advice. Armed with sarcasm, caffeine, and alarming emotional attachment to stray creatures, I believe compassion is less of a virtue and more of a lifestyle disorder. One that I embrace. When I’m not writing, I’m usually busy running a full-time HR consultancy business, rescuing animals, or trying to maintain dignity while being emotionally manipulated by my pets. Through my literary work, I try to blend humour with heart, celebrating the messy coexistence of humans and non-humans in modern urban India.
