Circus

My awed senses cannot do justice to how magnificent it all looked.

Speechless with excitement, I was finally sitting at the seat booked.

Oh! I had yearned & hankered to go, to sit beneath the mammoth tent.

Finally, the night had arrived. Oh! I tell you, it all looked resplendent.

The twinkling lights beckoned, cavorting amid shimmery dunes.

They danced and bounced around, gyrating to rhapsodic tunes.

It was a surreal sight, magical; one that I had never before seen.

God! If only this vista could always be what my life has not been!

Then by and by they entered, making grandiose entrances on cue;

Majestic elephants and stately horses, birds and people too.

And from amid that melange of performers, came the comic relief.

It was the clowns! Wow! I tell you they got us in splits, beyond belief.

It was truly a night to remember, I was living my dream you see

For as far as I can recall, in the Circus is where I wanted to be.

I was enthralled by the charms that the vagabond life had to offer.

I was a child yet, full of hope, unaware of the how Circus folk suffer.

They may bring a smile to our faces, hold us in stupefied rapture.

But their nomadic life has no permanency, its forever under censure.

They live from act to act; no home or inkling of things on the morrow.

I think I am better in my own life for I have a home without sorrow.

About Sonal Singh

An author, storyteller, and full-time observer of life’s glorious absurdities. I write humour-laced stories where chaos wears fluffy fur, emotions arrive uninvited, and middle-class Indian households become ecosystems of drama, love, and unsolicited advice. Armed with sarcasm, caffeine, and alarming emotional attachment to stray creatures, I believe compassion is less of a virtue and more of a lifestyle disorder. One that I embrace. When I’m not writing, I’m usually busy running a full-time HR consultancy business, rescuing animals, or trying to maintain dignity while being emotionally manipulated by my pets. Through my literary work, I try to blend humour with heart, celebrating the messy coexistence of humans and non-humans in modern urban India.
