Jungle Cottage is the first full length novel by Indian writer, artist and poet – Nirmala Singh – which she has published after the success of her 6 poetry books. Contrary to what the title suggests, the book is not based on a cottage set in the forest. The cottage is merely an allegorical reference to the isolation of emotions.

The book deals with the emotions and emotional upheavals in the life of its main protagonist. The book chronicles how the value systems ingrained in a person since childhood symbolizes the person he/she becomes later on in life.

The novel is written in Hindi but the language is easy to understand even for people who have not read works written in Hindi after their mandatory middle or high school syllabus. The highlight of the book for me were the many similes and metaphors that have been artfully used by the author to convey deep or subtle emotions. They make a reader take pause and reflect on their own life, its struggles and make a reader face their own emotions. Perhaps, that was the author’s intent? Whatever be the reason one thing is certain – this is a book that has a part of the author embedded in it. Long after you down the book after reading it, the characters stay with you. Isn’t that the hallmark of a good book?

An extract from the book

About Sonal Singh

I believe that life is a repertoire of anecdotes. The various situations that we encounter, the many incidents of every day, the people we meet, our conversations with them; all make life a melange of tales. And, that is what I attempt to capture through my writing. My cooking is no different! It reflects my love for travel and my love for innovation. The kitchen is my happy place. So, even though by vocation I am a recruiter (www.rianplacements.com), by passion I am a writer, home chef and a hodophile.
