About the author –   Dr Aparna Salvi Nagda is a homeopathic practitioner by day and also a passionate writer and educator.

About the book – There are some stories that write themselves. The author feels a compulsion to write the tale. There are other stories that need to be written because they highlight topics that we ordinarily choose to overlook. In such stories, the author feels a compulsion to highlight an issue because we, as people, do not want to think about such things. We don’t want to dwell on them or discuss them. But that doesn’t mean that they are any less important!

Silence is a powerful tool! There are times when a person’s silence roars louder than their surrounding quietude. Their silence speaks more than their tongue ever could. It conveys current emotions, past traumas, possible daily jousts with inner demons that constantly threaten to swathe a person’s sanity. That is what ‘The Labyrinth of silence’, Aparna Salvi Nagda’s debut book is about.

Is silence equivalent to muteness? Is silence a form of weakness? Should those who prefer to remain silent, not be heard? – all the things that the book makes one wonder.

As is evident from the cryptic title, ‘The Labyrinth of silence’ is a book filled with the remonstrations of the heart and the mind. It is a maze of indescribable feelings. It embodies the consternation of the souls, those few who would experience darkness even in the brightest galaxy, surrounded by the shiniest stars.

This book is a heavy read. It is fictional but it touches upon topics that are rooted in our mythology, our life and the circumstances that we, as individuals, must endure. Like the rotating tyres of a bicycle, the plotline rotates between cities and people and yet, as the spokes of a bicycle tyre would hold the rim together; the central characters, hold the story line together. This book is about how the trauma of one’s childhood can forever alter the path that one embarks on. The trauma digs in its tentacles and impedes everything – life, relationships, the chance at love or laughter, the way one sees things thereafter, the way one battles situations, the way one constantly is at war with a perpetual sense of being submerged – everything! Trauma changes people that this book is living proof of that.

If you are prepared for a grave read that is heavy with metaphors and impregnated with the demons of trauma; pick this one up. It will induce deep thought and reflection!

About Sonal Singh

An author, storyteller, and full-time observer of life’s glorious absurdities. I write humour-laced stories where chaos wears fluffy fur, emotions arrive uninvited, and middle-class Indian households become ecosystems of drama, love, and unsolicited advice. Armed with sarcasm, caffeine, and alarming emotional attachment to stray creatures, I believe compassion is less of a virtue and more of a lifestyle disorder. One that I embrace. When I’m not writing, I’m usually busy running a full-time HR consultancy business, rescuing animals, or trying to maintain dignity while being emotionally manipulated by my pets. Through my literary work, I try to blend humour with heart, celebrating the messy coexistence of humans and non-humans in modern urban India.
